Onur Gülfidan
In his paintings and drawings, Onur Gülfidan reflects the social and political circumstances in which he lives. His figures remain innocent in an isolated world that is remorselessly shaped by technology. Ironically, they look crippled and feeble but rebel against a pessimistic worldview.
Influenced by cinema, comic books, animation, and computer games, all of which have shaped his visual perception since the 1980s, Gülfidan unites these genres with classical artistic training. This imagery narrates what is underplayed and unheeded and critiques the dominant ideology. “It is as if most of the people leading their lives are standing in front of the sun, thinking ‘This sun is shining on me!’ A careful eye, however, would see that they are only casting a shadow upon the beautiful world that lies behind them,” he says.Onur Gülfidan was born in Istanbul, Turkey in 1974. He received his bachelor’s degree in painting from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Mimar Sinan University in 2000 and went on to complete a master’s degree in graphics and painting at the same institution. Gülfidan opened his first solo exhibition in artSümer in 2009. He lives and works in Istanbul.
